Christmas Blogger Q&A // Rachael Stray

Welcome back to my Christmas Blogger Q&A series. The series is running from 1st December right up to the big day. Today we welcome Rachel Stray.

Rachael Stray

Hi everyone I’m Rachael. I’ve just celebrated my 30th birthday in November and I live in the fabulous North East of England with my husband. I work in Public Relations and really enjoy my job. I had been thinking of starting a blog for about 18 months or so but hadn’t had the time to really get something set up so once things settled down I finally took the plunge. I’ve been blogging for over a year now and I write about a little bit of everything – food reviews, places we’ve travelled, days out and product reviews.

1) Where do you spend Christmas Day and what do you usually do?

We take it in turns to spend Christmas with my family in the North East one year and then down in Lincolnshire with Steve’s family the other. This year it’s our turn to stay up here so we’ll spend Christmas Eve at our home and then Christmas Day we’ll be at my parents’ house. My mam, dad and brother will be there as well as my nana and cousins. I’m really looking forward to it. We’ll then go down a few days later to see Steve’s family so we get the best of both worlds.

We open presents in the morning and then we have a big Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. We play silly games and generally have a good laugh, it’s all a bit chaotic but I love it!

2) Do you have any traditions which your family have or you have started?

Yes we do. So in the run up to Christmas I have always had an advent calendar. I’m a real lover of all things Cadbury and every year since I was a little girl my mam has bought me an advent calendar. Despite being almost 30 she still buys me one and now my husband gets one too.

Every year I visit Fenwick window and that really gets me in the festive mood.  Every year the Northumberland Street set of windows is transformed from advertising clothes, bedding and homeware goods into a magical story. This year’s theme is the Snowman and can’t wait to see it.

It attracts families and people of all ages from all over who queue up to get up close to see the story unfold window by window. There’s little characters and themed music and it all moves. It really does feel magical.

Every year when I was little we’d always get new pyjamas for Christmas Eve. So after a hearty family meal together sat round the dining room table we’d pop off for a bath or shower each (separately of course) and our new festive-themed pjs would be waiting on our beds. Last year Steve’s mam bought me my Christmas Eve pjs as we spent Christmas with them so the tradition continues!

3) Which Christmas character would you like to be and why?

This is a great question! I think I’d like to be Susan Walker from Miracle on 34th Street it’s one of my all-time favourite Christmas films. I love her enthusiasm and belief and love of Santa!

4) If you were able to invite 3 famous figures (past or present) to Christmas dinner, who would you invite and why?

Oooh this is a tough one! I’d invite Robin Williams as I think he’d entertain us all, David Attenborough because he would educate and fascinate us with his many stories of different animals and experiences and finally Tom Hanks as I’m sure he has lots of stories to share too and comes across as a genuinely nice guy.

5) If you could spend Christmas anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’d spend it with my family at our home all together and there’d be lots of food, fun and laughter.

6) Tell us your best Christmas cracker joke…

What do they sing at a snowman’s birthday party?
Freeze a jolly good fellow!

7 ) In the past I have asked about your favourite song & movie, this year I’m asking, what is your favourite Christmas TV Special?

My favourite Christmas Special has to be Father Ted. It was a tradition in our house to watch the Christmas special every year until of course the show ended with the untimely death of Dermot Morgan. The one where they got lost in the lingerie section of a department store is still hilarious to this day.

8) Do you own any Christmas Jumpers, and do you have any favourites?

Yes I own a few and I am a big fan of Christmas jumpers. I think I might want a new one this year though!

9) Do you usually hit the shops or do your shopping online?

I try to do my shopping in the shops as I prefer it. I’m hoping to buy from more independent places this year to try to support small businesses.

10) Where is your favourite place to visit on the run up to Christmas?

I love Christmas markets as I love visiting all the different stalls and getting right in the spirit of it all. I really like Lincoln and Edinburgh Christmas markets. I’m looking forward to mooching about the Christmas market in Newcastle this year.

Is there anything you have been proud of in 2018?

I am really proud that I have been blogging for over a year now and I’ve shared some of the things I have learnt in this post: https://rachaelstray.com/celebrating-my-one-year-blogiversary/.
